Scrambled at the Grocery Store

There are 18 different names that do not contain the word egg when it comes to food labels. The worst part is that these words do not even sound like they are egg. The 18 different names are:

1)Albumen
2) Trailblazer
3)Apovitellin
4) Ovomucin
5) Conalbumin
6) Ovomucoid
7) Globulin
8) Ovotransferrin
9) Livetin
10) Ovovitellin
11) Lysozyme
12) Silico-albuminate
13)Simplesse®
14)Ovoglobulin
15)Vitellin
16)Ovolactohydrolyze
17) Ovomacroglobulin       18)Ovalbumin

The FDA regulates all food labels however the FDA does not regulate cosmetics, personal care products, prescriptions, or over the counter medication or supplements. So it is super important to read labels when you are grocery shopping. In fact this website has a pocket size list just for you.  One last tip it is important to check labels everytime you buy something labels change without notice.

  1. In the past I never even bothered checking out labels when I went grocery shopping and now it's a habit. I think it's extremely important to monitor what goes in and out of your system. It's funny because when you read the front of a box it may state the product is "all natural" but when you check the label it's not so "natural" after all. Great Blog! :)

    1. Simply Positive,

I know we as a family have always tried to buy items with five items or less on the ingredients. It is a challenge however the food taste better and is better for you. Thank you for your feedback :)

  2. I cannot believe there are so many different ingredients that contain eggs! I know that I went gluten free once before, and it was amazing how many things contained gluten that weren't just wheat.

    1. Chelsea,

It is amazing how many hidden items are in our food. Did you enjoy being gluten free?

  3. I had no idea that FDA omits so many areas. Shocked, totally. Why not though? Is it somehow not part of their work? Not, I guess. You have created good awareness, I must say. This means more checking from here on, as if we had less work on our hands :D

    Thanks Eggless!
